Artist Statement

I try to “Dance” my paintings with the free brushwork of the Sumi-E style of Japanese ink painting.  I have studied with Japanese masters who have inspired me to “flow” my work.

I am known for my use of the vignette after discovering the early watercolor works of Andrew Wyeth. I love to leave white paper with strong use of contrasts.  I am primarily a plein aire painter, loving the inspiration of outdoor painting.  My career includes teaching, judging and showing my work in various Galleries.  I received my MFA Degree from Stanford University.

Jan is available to provide coaching to artists at all levels.  For more information, click here.
